Totesport Ten To Follow Jumps Competition - Shortlist template

Some experienced players who use our method and rules like to replace some horses in our shortlist with horses of their own choosing.  For their benefit, there is this blank version of our shortlist table.  The table can be printed off or, better still, can be used to type horses' names directly into the blank spaces, on your own computer screen, in the same way that we do.  How to do that.

Wildcard Rule
(6) ...on completing your first line of ten, return to top of list and pick another line of ten, choosing differing numbers.  Repeat this until you have completed the number of lines you intend to enter.  We recommend, in your first four lines, that you include all 36 selections (including any blanks, pro-rata), so you have covered every horse and every blank at least once in your overall entry.  In each of those four lines, mix stronger horses and blanks with more speculative horses and, finally, use the blanks as wildcards to fine-tune the lines.  Then, in your subsequent eight or so lines, start to whittle your lesser fancies out so as to pull more of your stronger fancies and pro-rata blanks together.  We suggest about twelve lines altogether - that's £144, which is only £6.64 a week for a whole season's enjoyment without breaking the bank if things turn out bad this year for either your shortlist or your choice of tens from it.

During Jan/Feb, names should be pencilled in left of horses not in the shortlist which emerge as live prospects to win at Cheltenham and/or Aintree.  Pairs of these can be added to any worthwhile lines for free in February in time to try to win £25K for most points at Cheltenham or £10K for most points in March.

How to use the blank table

By using our blank table and associated rules, this will ensure every line you enter will be consisting of horses, albeit horses of your own choosing, which are the right kind of horses in the right kind of proportions.  This will mean you are only entering well-structured lines and, as all TTF fans know, that is half the battle in this exciting competition.

The template can be used to list any number of horses from 18 all the way up to 36.  To cover a basic 18 selections, horses' names should be written against all the pink numbers in col 3.  To cover between 19 and 27 horses, further names should be added against the yellow numbers.  To cover between 28 and 36 horses (recommended), more names should be added against the green numbers.

There are two ways in which you can use our blank table.  Either (i) print off a paper copy and hand-write horses' names on the sheet or (ii) recommended, save the page to your desktop as a .htm file, open the file and type straight into the list on your computer screen.  Instructions for both options follow...

1.  Printing

Option A - Printing the whole page
You can print the page now, while you are still online, in the normal way from your web browser.  Click File > Print Setup... > at Margins, change the settings for all four margins from 25mm, or whatever, down to 10mm (so as to see more table per page) > OK, click File > Print > at print range, choose to print just the first two pages (that's enough to cover the full table) > if there is a choice between printing in B&W or colour, choose B&W (no point wasting expensive coloured inks) > at number of copies, choose 1 > OK.  If you do not have a working printer, you can call up this web page on any other computer e.g. a friend's, one at work, or one in an icaff, and print the page from there.

Option B - Printing just the table
If you just want to print the bare table, with little or no text above or below it, set up the margins to 10mm as per Option A > hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse down the area of the page containing the table, so as to highlight just the whole of the table, taking care to include the top and bottom border of the table > with the table suitably highlighted, release the mouse button > click File > Print > at print range choose 'Selection' > at number of copies, choose 1 > OK.  The print-off will spread over 2 x A4 pages.

2.  Typing on the screen

Typing onto the screen is the recommended option because it is so much easier then to add or delete horses or move them about - just like using a word processor.  Three simple steps to get you going...

(i) Choosing a Web Editor
There are dozens of different web editors available but only a small few are up to this particular job.  You will need to have either one of the top three names, that means Adobe Dreamweaver or either of the defunct pair, Microsoft FrontPage or Adobe GoLive, or one of the following three freebies: Netscape Composer (which was a free component within the Netscape 6 browser), Nvu (which is a free standalone version of Netscape's editor Composer) or KompoZer (which is a free improved offshoot of Nvu).  If you haven't already got any of those six, then download the last one called KompoZer.  You will not have to learn anything about HTML or web design, so don't worry.  The tool is just a vehicle to open the table so you can type straight in it, that's all, we promise.  And you will find that compiling a shortlist in a web editor is just as easy as doing the same thing in a Word table or an Excel spreadsheet.  Cont. in RH col.
   Cont. from LH col.

KompoZer does not require installing, it just runs.  The download is a zip file.  Extract the contents directly into a new folder called Kompozer > move the folder so it has the path C:\ Program Files\ Kompozer.  To put a shortcut to KompoZer on the desktop, open the Kompozer folder > right-click on the program's application file and choose to create a shortcut > right-click on the new shortcut, hold down and drag it onto the desktop > release the right button and choose 'Move here'.

(ii) Download this web page containing the table
With this web page still open in your browser, click File > Save as... > choose to save in (My) Documents > choose to save as a web page complete (*.htm) > Save > open the (My) Documents folder > find the saved file (called ttfblank.htm) and make a copy of it > name the copy after the current season so it reads, say, 2008-9 (or 2008-9.htm if all file extensions are normally visible on your system).  You now have a blank master for future years, and a current copy to work on.  To put a shortcut on the desktop to the working copy, right-click on the file and right-drag it onto the desktop > release the right button and, from the menu, choose Create Shortcut Here.  Double-click on the shortcut and the page will open, off-line, hopefully in either your web editor (e.g. KompoZer) or your default browser.  If it opens in some other application, such as Notepad, Wordpad or Word, then spend a few minutes changing the file association for HTML files (.htm, .html) so that, in future, they will open by default in Internet Explorer (or another browser only if you do not have IE on your system).  You now have two new shortcuts on the desktop, one to open the table in your browser when you just want to look at the list, and the other to open KompoZer when you want to change the list.

If, at some future time, you decide to move the current doc from your (My) Documents folder to some other folder, note there is an associated folder, created at the time of download this page, called something like ttfblank_files, which will need to be copied to the new location as well, in order to preserve the page's formatting.  Also, the shortcut's Properties may need changing to point to the new location of the file.

(iii) How to work on the current doc
Open your web editor (e.g. KompoZer) > maximise its window > click File > Open > browse to where you saved the file (e.g. 2008-9.htm) and open it.

When the doc opens in the web editor, you will immediately notice some structural outlines on the page which will not show in a browser.  Just totally ignore the outlines, click in a cell next to one of the pink number 1s and start typing away.  Keep saving your work (that's File > Save), as you proceed, so you will never be in any danger of losing anything.  And also make a backup of the file immediately after ending each editing session.

You can open the saved page at any time, in your browser, to see the polished effect, by double-clicking the shortcut on the desktop (provided HTML files have been suitably associated with a browser as advised in (ii), 1st para., above).

If you want to take a print-off at any time, do that from the browser, not from the web editor, so as not to print the structural outlines.

That's it.  If you do intend to compile your own shortlist, rather than use the one by Capital Ratings, the table will still help to organise things efficiently for you, and the rules in the table will help you to perm only well-constructed lines of ten.  Good luck with your entries - but may you not beat ours, unless our own lines are rubbish!
