| Capital Ratings |
|
| Apart from our Tote Ten To Follow system, which is just one of a number of racing systems we are associated with, we also invented Capital Ratings which is a unique technique for comparing the top Flat horses from the current season (UK, Ir & Fr) with those from different seasons and even different generations. |
|
| The problem with conventional form ratings, commercial or official, is that they rely on human memory and somebody's opinion. Because of that, as soon as you try to compare any
party's ratings for the top horses of one season with the same party's ratings for the top horses of a previous season or, worse still, a previous generation, it seems as if little
or no regard is ever paid to what we at Capital Ratings believe should be the most important factor of all - which is accurate comparability from year to year. Capital Ratings were
invented specifically to address that issue because we like to know, with some conviction, the answers to questions like... Was Mill Reef really better than Nijinsky? If so, by how
much? Were either of them better than Dancing Brave (the unluckiest horse never to win the Epsom Derby)? Again, if so, by how much? Or, on the 2yo front, Arazi (1991)
was simply incredible but how did it measure up against notable predecessors like My Swallow (1970), or Mill Reef as a 2yo (also 1970), or, indeed, against successors like Johannesburg
(2001) or Rock of Gibraltar (also 2001), or New Approach (2007)? We do not believe you will find more convincing answers to these questions than the ones provided by Capital Ratings, which you will see later, as you read on down this page. |
|
| Capital Ratings use the standard 140 point scale. 140 equates to a top weight for
Flat handicap races of 10 stones (i.e. 140 lb.) This is the same scale as used by the
top commercial and official ratings, so direct comparisons can always be drawn. The significant
difference, however, is that Capital Ratings are not opinion-based - they are an impartial,
mathematical summary of a horse's overall racecourse achievement. The ratings thus generated
thereby automatically ensure the champions from the current Flat season are placed, in terms
of lifetime achievements, in a credible pecking order not only with one another but also with
their peers from previous seasons and previous decades. This is something which no other
ratings seem to achieve with any real consistency or credibility. What probably lets other
ratings down in this respect is that their 'final' ratings are not published until after they
have been massaged at committee meetings in order to please the differing opinions of different
handicappers or even different nations. In other words, the ratings are a compromise every
year and that is what probably costs them any chance of real consistency with the ratings of
previous seasons as they, in turn, were also a manipulated compromise. Our ratings are
quite different. What you see immediately a season ends is what you get, pure and simple.
No tweaking, no manipulating, no committees, no compromises. This stability is what also
allows us to publish final ratings well before (usually months before) anybody else. Those
are the reasons why we believe Capital Ratings provide not merely an alternative guide but also
a consistently realistic indication of the merit achieved by the top Flat horses. You
can judge this for yourself from the examples next from the last few years or, further down,
from the last few decades... |

STALKERS SYSTEM

|
|
| |

Some horses like to shadow the leading horse(s) before nabbing them in the dying stages. This is a cheeky way to win a race - and is really frustrating for the hapless rider(s) who've dragged the stalking horse round.
